MySQL connection problem

Hi,

I am currently installing a PHP/MySQL social networking software called 'Dolphin' (produced by a company call Boonex) onto my server.

I am getting through the install fine until I come to the database stage where I add in all my MySQL user/pword/dbase details. The software is then supposed to populate the database with tables and data, however I get this message:

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

I have tried the support of the company but they are notoriously bad at getting back to clients and also I have tried their forums, to which I have had no replies.

Any help would be much apprciated!

Is MySQL running?
Is it using a different port than what the application is using?
