Reconising ID tag

Why does mysql not reconise id tag's?

like example

<input type = "text" id="date">

but when i change it to name it now will recongise it and scipt works

<input type = "text" name="date">

Isnt it a standard now to use id rather than name? so why doesnt it work?

What you're talking about is an HTML form. The HTML is spec. is specified by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). According to them, the "name" element is sent along with the form as the key to the $POST or $GET arrays.

The "id" element is meant to be unique within the HTML Document Object Model (DOM). So the "id" is meant for HTML, while the "name" is meant for dealing with sending data through GET and POST requests. They can also be used inside javascript to define which element inside the form it's referencing.

So no, they're not meant to "replace" one another nor are they interchangable.

Thanks so much for clearing that up for me so i should be using:

<input type = "text" id="date" name="date">

or since im using it for POST purposes just dont bother with the id?

depends upon what you need. The id attribute is not required for PHP, nor HTML. So it's up to you. If you use it, that's fine. Just remember the "id" attribute has to be unique throughout the entire DOM, otherwise it won't validate (and might have adverse effects on javascript running on that page).

So if you want, yes, you can drop the id attribute, or you can leave it in. As I said, it's not required.
