Php "Steps-if/else" Help

Alright to make it short I'm having difficulty putting together a question/survey type application.. So let me explain a little:

Let's say there's 2 steps, Step 1 has to lead to a series of either questions or answers, and Step 2 will lead to a different set.. both will have sub categories and sub categories of those subs.. So can anyone help me figure this out?

  so If step 1 is chosen:

Ie; Step 1, What type of psychology courses are needed for psychologist
Answer; A) Councling
(If Step 1, 1a is chosen then go to this set of questions)
1a. These courses infect your chances of passing
2a. These courses do not affect your chances of passing.

else if
Step 2,
Answer; A) What type of conclusion would sum up the majority of your course:
(Same as above, if step 2, 1a is chosen then go to this set)
1a. This is a relatively hard course
(if 1a is chosen go to next set 1b)
1b. Multiple choices help you with this course.
"Yes"
" no"
(If yes is selected direct to Step 2, option 1, if no is selected go to Main)
2a. This course is relatively easy
"Yes"
"No"
(If yes is selected go to step 1, option A) (if no is selected then go back to Main dir)

This is basically the 'set up' of how it's suppose to be.. if the first few are configured then I can finish off the rest. Just need help with the start up to get familiar with it since I haven't been able to get it running right at all. Thanks

Looks like you have your logic mapped out. What have you tried thus far? What isn't working for you?

I tried to set variables for each sub category, so that if step:1 go to variable 1 which contained the first set of questions, then 1b would have the second set and so on so forth.. I always get a syntax error or a bunch of other errors..so after that I x'd out that idea and tried to make DB options with the questions/answers.. but that seemed even harder once i started actually calling things in..So I'm trying to find a way to do it without using anything from the DB and having it call in the steps/sub categories correctly.. also wanted it to be compatible incase i want to add in more steps/sub categories and so on so forth.

From what little I understand of your explanation I'd set up 2 db tables:
QUESTIONS
questionid
question
parentid

ANSWERS
answerid
answer
questionid

From there you can display any questions with a parent of 0 in the beginning. When an answer is selected query for any questions that have a parentid matching the selected answer (also call up the answers that share the new questionid).

This way no matter how complex your tree gets it remains easy to move questions and answers about an you never really need to deal with more than just a question and its immediate decendants or antecedents at any given moment.

Clean, deceptively simple, and flexible = elegant.

How would that work? Answers don't neccasarily get displayed.. so what the answer is has nothing to do with the actual question.. it just leads you to different areas until you're redirected back to the main menu.

I think the script has to be 100% compatible without anything being pulled from the actual db.. unless there's an easy way to do it by both pulling things from the db and echo's
