soap and colons in namespaces

I hae an application which uses soap. The problem I have is with colons an dhyphens in the namespaces.

I came across this

But the preg_replace doesn't work for me.

$xmlString = preg_replace("/(<\/?)(\w+)🙁[^>]*>)/", "$1$2$3", $response);

I found a thread on here but it seemed to work fine for the original poster.

Can anyone offer an idea as to what the problem could be?
