I saw a site which had an address like www.somethingorother.com/index.php/benefits
Is this like passing a variable? How does it look on the code side?

It's part of the Apache web server and you can use it to pretty up your urls from things like example.com/page.php?catid=5&sort=up&author=mandy to example.com/mandy/5/up
