I'm sorry to post here as I was sure I'd find the answer to this, but after several hours of frustration I'm still getting nowhere. I'm hoping someone out there will take pity on me and lend some expertise with what I hope is a pretty simple issue: utf-8 encoding.
The page I am working on is at www.onsenjapan.net; a Google Map of nice Japanese onsen baths. It's perfectly functional but I would like to have the Japanese name in kanji listed in the sidebar. Currently, as you can see in the sidebar at "Beppu" and "Kurokawa" there are just question marks.
I am using a PHP file (index.new2.php) to pull out an XML file, which is read by the Javascript of the Google Maps API. I've tried using utf8_encode, and tried altering the header (which seems to indeed realize there's utf8 on the page).
I am pretty sure the problem lies in one of the following:
- Incorrect Mysql column set up. (for example, I used to have "Variable" and now changed it to "Text." That did not help.)
- Incorrect set up of the XML page. (Is my PHP right? It loads the page fine, but I just don't know why it can't read the right utf8 info!)
- Incorrect encoding or decoding.
Any help would be hugely appreciated. Many thanks in advance.
