open_basedir restriction in effect - subdomains + image upload

I am currently trying to get my image class to upload all images to within a subdomain after reading some research on the speed benefits.

The problem is im running into basedir restrictions.

safe mode is disabled.
/var/www/virtualhosts/MYDOMAIN.com.co.uk/subdomains/images/httpdocs/ permissions are set to 777.
I have also added php_value open_basedir /var/www/virtualhosts/MYDOMAIN/subdomains/images/httpdocs/ to the htaccess just as an extra check.
The owner of the site and subdomain are the same user.

could someone please shed some light on whats happening.

the open_basedir configuration can only be changed at the system (php.ini) level. (Otherwise if you could change it at the .htaccess file level it would not really be very useful.) Also, just FYI, open_basedir does not care whether safe_mode is on or off.

You will need to either change the open_basedir system setting (or get the sys-admin to change it) to include the desired directory tree(s), or else change the upload directory to be within the open_basedir directory tree.
