PHP Login error

Hi,
I am new to php. I am attempting to set up a registration and login page. My registration page works. But I am given the following error when I click on the submit button to login.

Could not connect to mysql because Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (46)

I am stuck and don't know where to go from here.
