Calculating the # of months between 2 dates

How does one calculate the exact number of months between two dates? For example, January 2003 and September 2009? Something that spans a couple of leap years.

If you convert the month to an integer (1-12), you can then do:

$nbrMonths = abs(($yr1 * 12 + $mo1) - ($yr2 * 12 + $mo2));
