MySQL Automatic ID Generation Function

I'm a newbie at this. Sorry.

I was just wondering how to automatically generate the next ID for MySQL from PHP. I've been using PEAR and DB.php which has a simple nextID() function that automatically generate the next unique ID for data insersion. Is there something like this if you're just using regular PHP commands to MySQL (like mysqli_connect() etc)?

Declare the id column as AUTO_INCREMENT. When you want to insert a new row, simply exclude the id column in the list of columns and it will be auto-incremented.

If you need to retrieve the id right after insertion, use mysqli->insert_id.

Just out of curiosity though, what would happen if you have an auto incrementing field, but when you are inserting a new row and you put the id column in there, like say if the next id is supposed to be 10, you put the id as 15, which one takes priority?

I believe that the id will then be 15, but why not try for yourself and see what you get?

Anyway, in multi user systems if you got the highest id, you create plus one, meanwhile somebody insert another value with that plus one value...
so this is the problem with it...
