[RESOLVED] create a $var using sql query

what i thought was a relatively simple exercise has turned into a nightmare. (huge amounts of research and questions to try get a solution) 🙁
i hope i can find solution here... 🙂
i know very little about php or mysql, so i may ask for the simplest of things to be explained (sorry).
i have a vbull forum (or rather would like one), at least i have a subscription. i also have the vbadvanced add-on, to create pages.
my problem:
i would like to create a link in vbad navbar (or in a module), that links to a vbull forum of the same name (using a $variable).

steps: find out where the page name variable is defined (or set). make a db query that looks in forum db, finds a forum title that matches the page name, and delivers back the forum id. convert this query to a $var ($forumid) that can be used in a href, to link to the relevant forum.
this does look a bit complicated.

you should try a forum dedicated to vbull where your are much more likely to find someone who knows its inner workings

thanx for reply. perhaps i will reword my question. how to query db and return a single value, and use this value (in the form of a $var) as part of a href. forget vbull bit.

you have the forum name, $forum_name

you want to get the forum name's id from the forum_names table from database:

thanx so much for your response. my (eventual) code bares no resemblance to the above, however..... your code answered all my questions... i.e. it showed me each stage of the exercise, and i feel i have taken a momentus leap as a result! i am a happy chappie! 🙂 thanx again.
