Limit image load time

Hello again,

I was wondering if there is a way to set the max time allowed for any image to load ?

My problem is that sometimes, when I open a page where an external image is hosted, like an avatar, if the site feeding this avatar is down, my page will not open as well.

Is there any way to work through this, and get the page to load without caring for the image load or set a limit time for the image to load, then take it as broken perhaps?

Loading of images is done at the client side via separate HTTP requests, so you cannot really control it via PHP at the server side. You could possibly do something with JavaScript on a page onload event to get the images after the rest of the page has loaded. You might want to use place-holder <img> tags that load a single-pixel transparent GIF or PNG image with the <img> tag's width and height attributes set to the "real" image's dimensions, then have your JavaScript onload function change the src of that tag to the actual image you want loaded.
