a language question

i'm doing a site in English, French and Chinese - on the PC that has the chinese characters installed they all work fine as i'm in utf-8

however, on another PC the chinese characters aren't installed and it just displays rectangles instead of the characters. If I look at other chinese sites on that PC I get a dialogue box asking me to install the chinese character set but it doesn't happen with my site - does anyone know what i need to do to activate this dialogue ?

Are you specifying the UTF-8 character set in your Content-Type HTTP header (or the equivalent meta tag in the HTML headers)?

Not sure how many browsers support it at this point, but CSS3 has the @font-face selector you could use.

I have this in the head of my page

this is the site that doesn't ask to install the chinese characters

I noticed that the charset in the old site is

content="text/html; charset=gb2312"

could it be that ? and if it is, is there a way to do the same thing with UTF-8 ?

I have just noticed this in the css

body {
        font-family: "&#23435;&#20307;";
        margin:0px;
	font-size: 12px;
	color: #201E1F;
}

where the font-family has a chinese character name - could it be that ?

I don't really inderstand that @font-face thing : wouldn't the font companies get pissed off if developers put their fonts on a server as a free download with the site ?
