This should take http://www.example.com/automobiles and point it to http://www.example.com/index.php?view=autos, no?

Well this should be enough:

RewriteRule   ^/automobiles$ index.php?view=autos  [L]

^{/automobiles[/]?$} is probably the regex you were looking for.
