ampersand in form field value, cut off

I am trying to search MySQL for the value red & black, however when I pass the value through the URL only the first part of the form value is sent, red.

Example:

search.php?search_name=red & black

I have echoed this out to see what happens before it gets passed to MySQL and all that is getting sent is the value red.

don't use spaces in url, and
use urlencode.

Nothing to do with MySQL, and everything to do with the fact that you're not urlencoding the value before you put it in the URL. & marks the end of a name=value pair (as you'd notice from other URLs).
