no value for $_SERVER[PHP_AUTH_USER]

I'm about to pull my hair out trying to figure this out.

I'm using Mac OS X and have PHP and MySQL installed on my system.

$_SERVER[PHP_AUTH_USER] returns no value.

When I look at phpinfo() I see that many other $SERVER values are listed, but $SERVER[PHP_AUTH_USER] is not one of them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

(and yes, I've searched high and low and cannot find anything!)

Is your PHP installation running as an Apache module (or if IIS running PHP 5.x as an ISAPI module)? If not, the hooks into the HTTP basic authentication stuff are not there.
