mod rewrite subfolder

my working directory is in /home/name/public_html/proj_v1. i have set htaccess by rewriting so that my domain points to proj_v1. however, i have a folder called "photos" in /home/name/public_html/ which contain pics of products. how do i access these photos from the subfolder proj_v1??

EDIT: You didn't clarify... did you mean "access" as in reference them in client-side code (e.g. HTML)? If so, then I would say alter your mod_rewrite expression so that it doesn't rewrite any URL that starts with '/photos/' .
