I need some help configuring my new SuSE 11.0 server to allow Dreamweaver CS3 to connect. I can connect to it using CoreFTP 1.3, but Dreamweaver has a pretty lame FTP client.

The Adobe folks haven't been very helpful. At first they tried to tell me I couldn't use an IP address:port in the "Host" field, but I pointed out that I use it to connect to the old server - and that works fine. In fact, the old and new server have identical settings in CoreFTP except for the IP address. But Dreamweaver FTP works with the old server, and not the new one.

The only useful thing they've said is that Dreamweaver supports SFTP but not SSH or any other security. I'm not sure how to even check that. I'm using VSFTP on the server, so you'd think SFTP would be the default...

Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try examining the FTP log to see if it gave any helpful information? Here's a note from Adobe's online help manual:

Note: In general, when you encounter a problem with an FTP transfer, examine the FTP log by selecting Window > Results (Windows) or Site > FTP Log (Macintosh), then clicking the FTP Log tag.

OMG - Dreamweaver's FTP log is even worse than worthless. The only thing it says (over and over again) is, "using port 22".

Who knows what is actually going on in there?

I only stick to Dreamweaver because it offers some auto-complete hints. If it weren't for that one feature it wouldn't be any better than the free Eclipse IDE.

Well...okay, it does print line numbers, but Eclipse prints color code hints, so that's a wash.
