using php to modify jpg's (add photographer & copywrite info)

My application uploads photographs from a users hard-drive, resizes them as necessary and stores them in the appropriate folders. Job done.

I was wondering if there was a way that while this processing is underway, I can add some kind of visible copy write information into the image? Is there a function that allows images to be merged? or text written to images?

I have had a look around to see if there is anything on this, but don't really know what I am looking for.

The [man]image[/man] functions can add text (and other stuff) to an image.
