MySQL query

Hi,

I cant work this one out! it should be straight forward...

i have to date entries in a row 'startdate' and 'enddate' I wish to find out which entry covers a variable date.

for example one entry has a startdate - 2009-01-20 and endate - 2009-01-28 using the variable 2009-01-23 how can this find the above entry please bare in mind that there will be numerous entries with various dates.

SELECT * FROM `date` WHERE '2009-01-23' BETWEEN `a` AND `b`

where a and b is the date fields.

I'm a newbie end needs some help with MySQL query.
I have a table let say it's news and 1 of the column is date. I want to display the latest news(4 row come from the latest news) in index based on date column. can anyone help me to write the query. I try several code but error always appears.....🙁
