Special characters

One of my users entered the following character: ö
Now both FF and IE do not know how to interpret it. Any suggestion on how to handle these kind of cases?

My page does have the following tag:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

It might be worth while looking at the following function

http://uk3.php.net/manual/en/function.htmlentities.php

This replaces all Non HTML characters with the corresponding HTML encoded value.

I've tried UTF-8 but got the same results...

I believe just setting the meta tag to utf-8 is not enough, you will also need to change the code to use utf-8 as well by saving the php file as utf-8
