Interpret special html entities in XML

I'm pulling some content from a RSS feed and a single quote (e.g. won't) is causing some output anomalies on my site...

heres the feed:

its the 5th article down as of this writing titled: "Fannie Mae won’t evict renters in foreclosures"

on my site that title renders: Fannie Mae Won’t Evict Renters In Foreclosures

this is my code for capturing the title:

$title = @ucwords(strtolower($xml->channel->item[$i]->title));

i have tried htmlentities(); htmlspecialchars(); etc... nothing seems to fix it

any help is appreciated...

Try htmlspecialchars() with the ENT_QUOTES constant for the second (optional) parameter.

Looks like your data has M$ Word "smart quotes" characters in it. You might try filtering it through this function (it does not cut-and-paste well here with the special characters in it, thus the link.

<title>Fannie Mae won&#8217;t evict renters in foreclosures</title>

Not sure how MSO would come into play with this

OK well i took the header output from that link:

header('Content-Type: text/html; charset="UTF-8"');

and tweaked a few things and its running smooth now...
