Check the time with PHP?

I want my site to be able to echo the time on request of page. Basically echoing the time of the computer its running of, but i've found it so confusing and hard! So far i havent been able to find just a simple function that checks the time, theres something like a "unix timestamp" something about 1970 <.<

Can someone please help me here i've tried for along time :[

[man]time[/man] will return a unix timestamp. To format it, use [man]date[/man]. You may also find [man]strtotime[/man] useful for english to unix timestamp conversion.

i.e.

$now = time();
echo date("%Y/%m/%d", $now);

// or
echo strtotime("now"); // shows unix timestamp

Note that [man]date/man defaults to the current time, so you can leave out the call to [man]time/man in that case.

echo "Current date and time on this server: " . date("Y-m-d H:i:s");
