substr destroy html tag

hi, i think this question has been posted before but without much solutions.

im facing the same problem. i inserted user submitted strings to mysql, replacing \n with

so now i would like to display the first 100 characters of this string. but i encounter a prob whereby the tag would be broken OR it will be displayed in the string. (e.g: hello world )

That was probably a mistake. Leaving it as "\n" would make it easier to manipulate the data, then only change it to at the last moment when outputting to HTML. (It also will not pollute the data for database searches.)

hmm it works if i used ur example above. but if i extract from database, it will display \n instead.

while($row=mysql_fetch_assoc($result)){
echo nl2br(htmlspecialchars($row['description']));
}
