How do I display 10 items at a time

I have a page that takes around 1000 entries and shows them on one page. As the number of entries increase, the page gets bigger and takes longer to load. I want to divide this into 10 per page but I do not know how.
Does anyone have experience in this matter? and how do you solve this problem?
How do I query the database 10 items at a time, or is it even possible?
How do I make the links to the pages? like the link to the second page, third... when the entries keep on coming??
