Get all files in a http directory

Is there a way to get a files in a directory using a http path?

So i would want to see all files in folder /test

Only if there is no default file (index.php, default.html, or whatever) in that directory and the web server is configured to output a directory listing when a directory with no default file is specified in the URL.

Then how would i do that, please show an example if you dont mind.

If running under Apache, you could create a .htaccess file in the directory where you want this behavior. (It will affect any sub-directories, too.)

I was wondering how i could query another website not my own to see what files are in a certain directory. So, I dont think that would work for me, but any suggestions on that? Thanks nogdog

No, you can not enforce your will on another web site that you do not control. 🙂

You can only access whatever is accessible via HTTP. You can do what web spider bots do and look for links in the pages you know about, check to see if there are any sitemap.* files that give you pages to look for, etc.; but that is in no way guaranteed to find everything. There is no way I know of via HTTP to just say, "Show me all the files in directory such-and-such."

PS: If you have FTP access to the site, that's a different matter.

ok what about this. I'm trying to build a page that will query a site and get me all the email addresses that are listed on it using the mailto command. Is there a way to check a complete site for that? That is actually the whole purpose of this post?

PPS: URLs are not file paths.

Sounds like a fairly weird thing to do and there must be a more sensible way to get them all depending on what it is you want them for. But you'd have to spider the whole site, read every page, following all the internal page links and recording all the mailto: ones.

Well We are getting ready to open a new site that is specific for a certain city, there is a competitor of mine out there that already had advertisers for that city on his site with their email addresses clearly visible for anyone to use. So just trying to make less work by building a script to get me all these email addresses.

sorry. I found some software that does this. I needed it for a customer. I know that when I code a website I dont show users emails to the public, because you get spammers from hell. Any contact has to be submitted through a form and using captcha. Thanks though.
