URL rewriting not working

hello !

i have got a piece of code for url rewriting but it is not working --
.htaccess file code is -------------->

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase / 
RewriteRule product/act/(.*)/ product.php?act=$1
RewriteRule product/act/(.*) product.php?act=$1

this is the only code which i have in the .htaccess file.
for more info ---->
the above code should convert the url ---
http://www.damain.com/product.php?act=some
TO
http://www.damain.com/product.php/act/some

can anyone please help me out , b'coz i don't know much about .htaccess.

First off, you could combine those two rules into one:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase / 
RewriteRule product/act/(.*)/? product.php?act=$1

As to your problem, I don't think you quite understand the rewrite code above.

The rewrite rule says to convert links such as http://yoursite.com/product/act/foobar/ into http://yoursite.com/product.php?act=foobar .
