its a php front end to Xmail mail server, so no its not like a smpt server, i think the poster (or I) is confused.

If your attempting to set up a local mail server, then i can strongly recommend using postfix.

I use this myself, and i also installed webmin to administer it.

All you then need to do is set up the SMTP host in the PHP.INI file, and then the standard PHP mail function will work using that server.

I actually using apache2triad and inside got phpxmail but i don't know how to use it and how it functions. i am referring to one project that they are sending email from the server and they use SMTP server (qksoft SMTP server) and they use the command of mail($email, "New mail Has Arrived", $message, "From: AMNS\r\n" . "X-Mailer: PHP/" . phpversion ()); in PHP script. they choosing the email address based on the database. So, i wonder can i do the same things using the apache2triad? But it is new to me and i am not familiar with it. May be if someone that been used apache2triad can give me some opinions or tell me any websites that i can refer to.

When i open the phpxmail, it required me to login:
* to login as a
user: user name is your email address, password is your POP3 password
domain admin: user name is postmaster@yourdomain, password is your POP3 password
server admin: user name and password are set in your XMail ctrlaccounts.tab

So, if i wish to do the same things as the project should i do any login in or just change the $header in the mail() command? I am very confused about the POP3 password it mention...

It's not really appropriate to give you a tutorial on POP3 & SMTP and how they work here, but the up shot is. SMTP is used for sending mail and POP3 is used for receiving it.

If all you want to do is send mail from PHP, then using the mail function is fairly straight forward:

  $receiver = "[e-mail]";
  $sender = "[e-mail]";
  $subject = "Email subject";
  $message = "This is my message to send in an Email...";

  $header = "From: " . $sender . "\r\n";
  $header = $header . "Reply-to: " . $sender . "\r\n";

  mail($receiver, $subject, $message, $header);

You really only need to get involved in the whole POP3/SMTP business if your actually setting the mail server up yourself. If the server is already running and can accept mail then you just need to learn the mail command... http://uk3.php.net/manual/en/book.mail.php

If you want to learn about SMTP & POP3 then you need to read the official Internet RFC documents from http://www.rfc-editor.org/ beware though most of it is not light reading.

I eagerly need to write a code that will send out email after the matching of the email address key in by the user in webpage with the address in database. But i am new in php so i try out some simple code as below:

I try to send to yahoo and hotmail but both in vain. i wonder why it didn't work or there are some settings that need to be done? I using apache2triad and i didn't go and change the settings inside. I save the above code as test.php in C:\apache2triad\htdocs and run in browser by typing http://localhost/test.php. Am my steps correct?

you need a mail server to send mail, if you where using a hosting company they would have one, as its on your pc, you have to install one on your pc, or use one that will allow 'remote' access.

So, can u help to check whether in apache2triad got providing mail server? If not where could i install one that is free of charge? I don't know about hosting company but i think i am not using one...

For help with apache2triad you'll need to go to http://apache2triad.net/forums/

I've just quickly read the apache2triad web page and it looks like a wamp install, so i'm guessing your localy developing and testing PHP scripts on your home PC, and using apache to serve them back through your browser.

This is all well and good, but to send email you really must send to an SMTP server. We cannot help you set this up, nor can we explain how it works beacuse it's beyond the scope of PHP.

One thing i will say though, look at your Email program.. Outlook, Thunderbird or what ever it is you use on your PC. Your Internet provider will have configured an SMTP server that allows you to send mail using their own network.

Once you know how to set that up, then put the details of the SMTP connection into the appropriate places in your PHP.INI file and the PHP Mail function will then work.

If all you have is Internet connection, and have to use something like yahoo or hotmail to send email then your stone cold out of luck i'm afraid, because you simply will not be able to send email from your local PC without access to an SMTP server.
