How to change the middle of the page only!

OK, I have a button on the page with a picture on top of it, if you press the button it goes to another picture from the database. The problem is that the whole page has to change.
How can I make it so just the only thing that changes is the picture?
I do not want to use frames and AJAX is killing a flee with a bazooka! Any other suggestions?

I often use the Jquery javascript library http://www.jquery.com/ for ajax related operations in PHP, the 2 of them work perfectly.

Using it to manipulate things like content frames is childs play.
