Slow Loading in Internet Explorer

I have a problem with my site. When users visit the site using Internet Explorer, in the bottom left corner of the browser it runs through thousands of "Items remaining" in a "countdown" fashion. When the countdown of items remaining reaches zero, then the page finally loads. This really slows things down for the user.

This DOES NOT occur when viewing the site with FireFox, Safari, or any other browser. FireFox and Safari load the website pages all at once, so loading occurs almost instantly.

Has anyone else run into this issue? I'm really stumped. 😕

Most likely it's due to the use of nested tables for the page layout: IE does not display tabular layout until it receives all the data that it needs to calculate all the table/row/cell dimensions. This is another reason that it is a good idea to only use HTML tables for tabular data, not for page layout (http://www.hotdesign.com/seybold/).

To test this, I went through the hassle changing the layout to remove any nesting. The result?

I found that yes, the page did show up instantly. It showed up and loaded the items before my eyes rather than hiding them from me and showing up all at once at the end. But the page loaded just as slowly, and I still couldn’t scroll or otherwise interact with the page until it was finished. The changeover simply let me watch the page load slowly.

Conclusion? IE bites. :mad:

Still looking for workaround if anyone has any tips. Then again, perhaps IE just can't handle php pages with large calls on a dbase. No matter what we try, IE won't load this page in a decent amount of time, while all other browsers load it instantly.

You might want to try the YSlow plug-in for Firefox as well as running the page through http://analyze.websiteoptimization.com/ to see what info and tips they come up with for optimization.
