Auto Retrieve Data To Page

Hello,

i am using mysql and php.
I have a very simple chat page (rather a immediate comment page)created. many post in that area. But the viewer only sees the inputed data only after a refresh is done.

so presently i make the wholepage refresh automatically in every 4 seconds.
as,
<META HTTP-EQUIV=Refresh CONTENT="4;url=2.php">

butwhat i want is to show data on a page/ table or area, as soon as it is entered by someone els. That is i dont want the page to be refreshed. But the page or area or table should be automatically updated to be viewd as soon as someone enters data to the data base.

This is like what i see when chatting in a chat window

This could be very simple.

Well... to be honest, unless your willing to learn Javascript & Ajax then thats about as good as it get's

There are many Javascript libs around such as "Prototype" (http://www.prototypejs.org/) , "script.aculo.us" (http://script.aculo.us/) and my favorite "Jquery" (http://www.jquery.com/)

What each of these librarys allow you to do is replace just a portion of your web page without replacing all of it.

I typed an example up for another user of the forum yesterday, using Jquery with PHP to replace a content section (See this thread - http://www.phpbuilder.com/board/showthread.php?t=10363495)

It doesn't do exactly what you wanted, but if you use the tutorials on the Jquery site, and look at my example you should be able to see how you can start to build a chat box.
