Sessions across sub-domains

I have a site with 2 sub-domains. The main site (www) allows users to login and I want to persist that state across the 2 sub-domains - one is used for a forum, the other for a blog.

Is it possible to access the $_SESSION values set in the www domain, when I am in the forum or blog sub-domains?

If so, how would I do this?

I believe this can be done by setting the session.cookie_domain configuration value to ".domain.com", noting the leading "." at the start. The session cookie should then apply to any sub-domain, e.g. "www.domain.com", "users.domain.com", or just "domain.com".

I've had to put in a quick solution to work around this for the moment. If I'd been writing all of the code myself I'd have used some of the ideas I've read about. However, this is mostly 3rd party code and I feared the amount of disruption that I might cause.
