[RESOLVED] preg_splitting my head

Hi Guys,

Regular expressions are my biggest achiles heel. I get three pages into a tutorial and my head starts to hurt.

Can anyone help me with a preg_split to break my article at the <p> tag so I can insert an ad between paragraphs.

I have tried (dont laugh):

preg_split('/<p>[*]<\/p>/',$a[Article]);

and preg_split('/^{<p>*<\/p>$/',$a[Article]);}

amd even preg_split('/^{<p>*$/',$a[Article]);}

and: preg_split('/<p>*/',$a[Article]);

None work. I have also tried explode('<p>',$a[Article]); that doesn't work either. Please help.

What about something like:

$data = preg_replace('@(?<=</p>)(.*?)(?=<p>)@is', "$ad_text$1", $a['Article']);

Where $ad_text is obviously the data for the advertisement.

That doesn't work. I think I know what yu may have been getting at though.

The reason why I wanted to split it was because I only want the ad between the last two paragraphs.

$pos = strripos($html, '<p>');
$html = substr_replace($html, $ad, $pos, 0);

Sorry, I'm on php 4 -- anyway, wouldn't that replace <p> with my ad?

anyway, I'm php4 and according to the php manual strripos is php5

• strrpos() is available for php4, as I recollect.

Thanks Installer. That didn't work, the ad went after the article, couldn't work out why. but it gave me what I needed.

This works:

$pos = strrpos($article,'<p>');
$need = substr($article,0,$pos);
$pos2 = strrpos($need,'<p>');
$need = substr_replace($need,$ad,$pos2,0);
$article = substr_replace($article,$need,0,$pos);

Your code places the ad at the front of the input. You said earlier:

...I only want the ad between the last two paragraphs.

This code does that:

$pos = strrpos(strtolower($article), '<p>');
$article = substr_replace($article, $ad, $pos, 0);
