enabling extensions on unix build

Where can I find the configuration options for enabling new extensions on a unix apache2, php5 install? In windows I've seen a list of extensions to enable and the dll files. Where would I find the packages available for a unix build?

Either write a .htaccess file or edit the httpd.conf file.

It looks like the https.conf file is blank and we're just running on defaults. Don't you have to re 'make' the php build and add with options? It would be great if we could just add lines to a conf file instead. What's the syntax look like?

Right now there are mysql options in /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini but no mysql in phpinfo() or curl options.

It still doesn't look like I can find an accurate list of the extensions running on the machine. Obviously, you can just do a phpinfo() but is there an easy way to see this in a config file? Is apt-get the only way those would have come in? If there was an apt-get list | grep php5 that still wouldn't tell you what's enabled. Thanks for any help!
