I have this code in a template that I am customising

   $lstr = "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ";
   for( $i = 0; $i < strlen($lstr); $i++ ) {
   $l = substr( $lstr, $i, 1);
   echo '<a href="' . tep_href_link(FILENAME_DEFAULT, 'alpha=' . $l ) . '"><u>' . $l . '</u></a>&nbsp;&nbsp;';
}
?>

What I really want is to separate the letters on different lines like this:

ABCDE on line 1
FGHIJ on line 2
KLMNO on line 3
PQRSTU on line 4
VWXYZ on line 5

Ho do I do this?

you can add to an array which letters should follows an ENTER:

$lstr = "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ";
$enters_on = array( 5, 10, 15, 21 );
for( $i = 0; $i < strlen( $lstr ); $i++ ) {
    if ( in_array( $i , $enters_on ) ) {
        print "<br />";
    } 
    // $l = substr( $lstr, $i, 1);
    $l = $lstr[$i];

another way using array_chunk and str_split (if you dont mind only 4 lines of output)

$lstr = "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"; 
foreach (array_chunk(str_split($lstr,1),7,true) as $chunk)
{
	foreach ($chunk as $letter)
	{
	echo '<a href="' . tep_href_link( FILENAME_DEFAULT, 'alpha=' . $letter ) . '"><u>' . $letter . '</u></a>&nbsp;&nbsp;' . "\r"; 
	}	
	echo '<br/>';
}
