2 Really Noob Questions

I am actually quite code at coding php but I still have a lot of newbie questions to go through. Here is two which have been bothering me for quite a while.

This one I am really intrested in. Look at this image.

How is it that when a tab is switched new information appears without the page changing or the url changing. That page is here. It's near the top try yourself.

Second question, how can I make it so that when an image is hovered over a box like this appears.
That page is located here and that is on the right hand side.

Sorry for the newbie questions, hopefully someone can help me.

Search the Web for "AJAX PHP", though the techniques are more general than expressed by the acronym.

That is more in the realm of clientside scripting than PHP.
