Help with Default Option

So here's the task I've been saddled with. There is a secretary I'm good friends with who would like me to edit/update a PHP application that's fallen by the wayside. Let me see if can accurately describe what I need help doing:

1. A report is generated using two tables for student payment: tblStudent, tblPaytype

2. Whenever she has to make a report from the report.php page she has to go through and select a paytype for each student from among many - which is very tedious.

3. She'd like to set a default paytype for each student - but sometimes students may switch paytypes.

4. So what I envision is that when she comes to report.php she still sees the same dropdown menu next to each student - but that the menu option is populated with a "default" value. And that she'd still be able to change this value on that page. Is that possible?

5. Or would it be just better to edit the studentrecord.php page every time she has to change a paytype? So that a default payType is hardcoded for each student record. It seems that some students change payType quite frequently so this option might not lessen her tedium.

Definitely. Sounds like an HTML question, unless I'm missing something. Just add selected="selected" to the default option in the drop down.

If you wanted to load some current value from the database and only display the default value if one isn't specified, though, that's a slightly different matter.
