Is there a way I open my php files in a web browser on my computer without uploading them to a webserver on the internet?

Yup. You can do it one of a few ways. You can run a local version of apache and php and MySQL or PostgreSQL.

If you want you can either download from www.apachefriends.org and install their WAMP server, or manually download Apache and PHP and install them on your own (there is a tutorial on this board).

Then you can use urls like http://localhost/filename.php and it will run just like on a web server, but locally instead.

ok i downloaded & installed it from apachefriends.org and now i'm not sure where i should place my files that i want to test. I tried putting them in the htdocs folder but nothing happens. if i just type: http://localhost it gives me a Not Found page.

I think the default WAMP document root is "c:\wamp\www\". If that's not it, find your httpd.conf file (probably in something like "C:\wamp\bin\apache\apache2.2.8\conf\httpd.conf" and see what is specified for the "DocumentRoot" setting. (Or if you have the WAMP icon running in the system tray at the bottom right of your screnn, left click on in, then select "Apache" and then "httpd.conf" in the sub-menu.)

Ok i got it to work, i just had to change the port because i had something else running on 80. Thanks

And one other thing please, how can i set a password for the user root? For instance, when i opened up phpmyadmin i see this displayed at the bottom of the screen:

From a MySQL command prompt*:

[URL="http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/set-password.html"]SET PASSWORD[/URL] = PASSWORD('new_password');

You can click on the WAMP icon and select MySQL -> MySQL Console.

Actually if you are running on a localhost (your Mac or PC) you don't really need to bother with it, since it is your own machine my localhost has been running for years with no password, but not my world wide web server, your local is just for you to test with and in all likelihood no one with access to your computer understands how to access it anyway, but if it makes you feel better then go ahead and act as if it were a www site that needs protection.
