mysql table question

OK,

Revisiting an old project that I never finished as part of an online class I am taking.

Original project was to track vehicle parking permissions..

The project didnt get far because I thought I should lump everything into 1 table..Needless to say, I was not very happy over time and the project fell off..

Basicall Now, I have multiple tables and I am trying to figure out how to tie several of these tables together.

Example:

Tables Residents(Personal Info, names, streets address) Vehicle(Vehicle Information) permission, actual starting and ending dates of parking.

In original I had all 3 tables as one, and now I have divided them out to all 3 tables...BUT, now how is the best way to correlate the data to each other specicially pulling data out of the permission table?

Do I insert the Resident and Vehicle info into the permission table? Do I just add the ID number from Resident and vehicle and somehow link and extract the data during a query?

I am just starting a DBA class, online and this is bugging me immensely...

if each resident can have multiple vehicles then you need another a table with resident.id and vehicles.id otherwise put the vehicles.id in the resident table.

I'm not clear on the exact relationship between permission-resident-vehicle so i can't say what the best table layout is for this relationship.
