My localhost setup views a .php5 ext but not .php

I installed XAMMP and it seems to be working fine except, if I try to view a file that ends with .php I get a dialog box that I am trying to open Xyz.php which is a PHP Script - Open With

Choosing Firefox it doesn't open. If instead I change the extension to php5 then it recognizes it and opens in a browser fine.

What setting and where do I change it so I can drop the 5 and just use php?

You need to access the file via the browser address bar using a localhost domain:

http://localhost/file.php

In this example file.php must be in the document root directory for your Apache configuration. (I think the default in XAMPP is the "htdocs" directory somewhere under the XAMPP install directory.)

I have tried the http://localhost/file.php but it gives me the same grief.

I believe there is a setting in some configuration that tells Apache which extensions to recognize as a web document and open with the browser?

That is what I am looking for, but I am not sure where to look or find it.

Open Apache's httpd.conf file and search for any mention of 'PHP'. Paste the relevant lines here for us to see - it sounds like you just need to add the ".php" extension to an AddHandler line somewhere.

There must be other lines in the .conf file (or perhaps in another linked .conf file?) that you've overlooked; the DirectoryIndex line doesn't integrate PHP with Apache.

I'm not sure how XAMPP is setup, so I don't know where the lines for the PHP inclusion would be. That's one main reason why I never use these XAMPP/WAMP/etc. packages and just do manual installs myself.

The phpinfo() shows that PHP was installed as an Apache module. In my httpd.conf file, I have the following:

But I don't see anything there that would make it work right with a .php5 file and not with a .php file. Do you?

No, you're right - the ".php" and ".php5" extensions are both attached to the same type.

So, that must mean that you're not really dealing with .php files. Since you're on a Windows platform, try enabling file extensions:

1. Open My Computer

2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options

3. On the View tab, scroll down to the "Hide file extensions for known file types"

4. Uncheck that box (if it wasn't already) and click OK

Now, go back to the files and make sure they were "something.php" and not "something.php.txt" or something of that nature.
