MySQLi vs. PDO

I am currently trying to get with the times (or at least, get with several years ago) and update the custom MySQL class I use on all projects. I have heard that for security and speed, it's best to go with MySQLi or PDO.

I've Googled a few articles, read this and that, and am still not certain on which method I should go with. The main advantage that I can see of using PDO is if I need to switch to another DBMS other than MySQL. I don't really foresee that happening at all (but then again, I never thought I'd live this long either, so who knows?).

So I thought I would throw the question out here to find out what others prefer, and get an idea on the pros and cons of both. An easy learning curve would be nice too. While I'm fairly confident in my PHP/MySQL skills, I'm by no means an expert.

You can read the PHP manual's MySQLi overview for a comparison. Personally, I prefer PDO as I also use SQLite so would rather not toggle between different programming interfaces, and I find PDO's interface, especially concerning prepared statements, to be better.
