HELP with Str_replace

I am in need of help, I have basic HTML knowldge but cannot figure out for the life of me how to use the above. My problem is this.

I receive an XML file with certain words that should be replaced with a word or link. I receive something like "My name is Dom ++LINK_1++" and need to change the '++LINK_1' to Topa.

How can I accomplish this? I hope I am making sense. thanks! 🙂

If we assume that the XML text is stored in the variable $xml:

$xml = str_replace('++LINK_1++', 'Topa', $xml);
