How to create a dynamic form?

I need to create a dynamic form, this form should fit in one page, the answer for some questions should change the number of secondary questions, for example:

1. How many dogs you have?

3

Name of the first dog:__
Name of the second dog:
Name of the third dog:____

Of course that if user skips or write zero, no secondary question should appear in order to keep a clean form.

I've made some research and it seems like a thing that should be made in JavaScript or AJAX but I'm not sure if its necessary or if there is another way to do it in PHP or which is the best way....

javascript is necessary (and useful). you basically need to submit the form whenever a user enters an acceptable value in your "how many dogs" field. submission of the form will refresh the page, check the value, and add the extra form fields.

Thanx, so, should I research JavaScript instead of AJAX?, and considering an affirmative answer, could you list some of the functions related with this need?
