[RESOLVED] remove some characters and numbers in a string

hi,

i have a string which consists mixture of a-z, A-Z, 0-9.
i want to remove certain characters and numbers in the string, how can i do that?

eg. e5Bd04Edhi8s......
i want to remove these characters and numbers [0, o, O, B, 8, i, l, 1] in the string.

You could use [man]str_replace/man with the characters to be replaced in an array for the first parameter, or [man]preg_replace/man with the characters to be replaced in a character class.

i use preg_replace to remove those characters, but i failed to get it work

$pattern[0] = '/0/';
$pattern[1] = '/o/';
$pattern[2] = '/O/';
$replacement[0] = '';
$replacement[1] = '';
$replacement[2] = '';

$finalstring = preg_replace($pattern, $replacement, $string);

And just to show the alternative NogDog mentioned above (with no empirical data that one is better than the other):

$remove = array('0', 'o', 'O');

$string = str_replace($remove, '', $string);

plan C. as it looks like either a random password or CAPTCHA text, how about excluding them from being picked in the first place. Otherwise you have to a pick some new characters if you want to keep the string length constant, and then recheck that the new characters are not ones you want to exclude.

str_replace is faster than preg_replace. A simple timed loop test will show this. Granted, on a single string or small batch to be processed, the speed difference is certainly going to be infinitesimal (splitting hairs really). I think it would take larger amounts of data to sift through to start seeing the difference. preg is still pretty fast given the overhead it has to deal with.

In cases like this, I would side with str_replace (but again, might not make much of a difference either way, depending on the data).
