Fall at first hurdle

I downloaded and unpacked php5 into /usr/src/php-5.2.9.

I go into that directory and do ./configure and a lot happens!

When I do make I get

make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.

Great! What do I do now?

That depends... did the './configure' finish successfully? Could you show us the full command you used as well as the last few lines of the output after you ran the configure script?

Also, which webserver are you using? Did you follow the instructions in the manual ([man]install.unix[/man])?
