how to select file name with the largest number and certain word

Hello,
Under one of my website directories, I have files such as 2009_06_13_A.htm or 2009_06_15_B.htm etc....

By using php include function I want to include certain files in that page.

1-How can I include the file with the name with the largest number, regardless of what A or B or C are etc...?

2-How can I include the file with the name with largest number AND having letter A or B or C etc... in the end of file name?

Please advise....

read all the file names into an array. process the name to strip out everything but the date into a new array. duplicate that into another array but strip everything but the letter at the end. do a sort on the newly created arrays, take the first or last result depending on how it was sorted and there you have it. Make sure to assign the actual file name to the new arrays so he new formatted value is still referenced to what file it goes to.

this looks like a solution...the problem though is i do not have all the file names yet. the files will be created as I do it almost every week and A B C names are not known right now either....So there is no set of data I can read to a database right now... to do what you suggest, aside from uploading the file into its directory, at the same time i will need to put the file name into that database, so updating database, creating one more step to do each week, but it looks simple though... if there is no other way(i mean selecting the file names just by looking into directory), then i guess that is what i will do...
