Unavailable Replacement File

I'm noticing that the Twitter Widget loads inconsistantly, and also have another service that offers an image that can be hot-linked to which occasionally is also not available. Is there code I can write where if the widget is unavailable (aka - Twitter is down) I can have it load something in its place instead of having the giant black window? Also, is there code that can sense when the picture we hotlink to isn't loading and can load an alternate image?

well depending on how you call stuff from twitter you can do say:

if($html = file_get_contents('http://twitter.com/'))
{
// we got valid data from twitter
}
else
{
//error getting data
}

It's the widget that they offer - seems like it never loads correctly. I'll try that.

Any thoughts on the hotlink - would it be the same script?
