Full text search

hello guys

i'm doing something that is beyond my knowledge and expertise.

we are busy updating our website which is a social networking site where people can sign up make friends link in with clubs and venues and see their photos we took of them while they partied.

what i want to do is create a member search page where people can look for other people.

can someone please just give me some insight on what i need to do to my database how to set it up and what queries to use.

i've never attempted this before and been struggling all night trying to get it to work.

if someone can give me some basic guide lines on how to approach this i would be eternally great full!

fields i want to search is... Username(varchar60), name(varchar60), surname(varchar60), aboutme(longtext), interests(longtext)

hello guys

ok i manage to get my database setup for the full text search.

my Collation is utf8_unicode_ci my database engine is MyISAM

these are my fields that i have spesified as full text.

username, email, name, surname, city, province, country, aboutme, interest, aboutmusic, movies, quote

but for some reason its not doing what i want it to do its not selecting everything it should

heres my query and result when i search for a name "Johan" ( there is 5 records in the database with the same name and surname )

mysql> SELECT userid, email FROM useraccounts WHERE MATCH(username, email, name,
surname, city, province, country, aboutme, interest, aboutmusic, movies, quote)
AGAINST('Johan');
Empty set (0.00 sec)

but i have 1 entry that has the movie Titanic in the field, and when i search for that this is what i get....

surname, city, province, country, aboutme, interest, aboutmusic, movies, quote)
AGAINST('titanic');

can someone please maybe help me where i'm going wrong?
