So in all my years of coding, i've never used modrewrite... I guess that's going to change today

What I'm after is clean urls, so instead of seeing:

website.com/?page=somepage

you see

website.com/somepage/

There's also going to be cases where I'll need:

website.com/?page=somepage&subpage=details

and of course I'll want to see:

website.com/somepage/details/

Now, to show you really how new I am to this, what urls do I actually put in the code? The friendly ones or the query string based ones?

If it makes any lick of difference, I'm developing this site on my dev server so the url bases are going to be :

website.com/~clients/clientname/

but obviously once put into production the will be based on the docroot

well I've got this as my starting point (jn my htaccess)

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /~dev/client/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !^.*\.php$
RewriteRule (.*)/(.*) index.php?page=$1&subpage=$2

the dev directory has "allowoverride all" set..

when I goto the url on my dev site:

http://www.mysite.com/~dev/client/news/details/

my html based content shows up but all my css and imagery are gone

the links are relative to the re-written url, not the rewritebase

Include the folder with the images/css in the include path something along this:

Somewhere in a file that you are sure it can be found (let's call it bootstrap.php:

$path = realpath(dirname(__FILE__) . DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR . '..' . DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR . '..' . DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR . 'myCssAndImages');
set_include_path($path . PATH_SEPARATOR . get_include_path());

Does that work?
