Redirecting all pages of website to non www to www domain

Hello,
I want to redirect my website automatically from non-www to www domain. Here is what I have done.

rewritecond %{http_host} ^example.com [nc]
rewriterule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1 [r=301,nc]

This works for just the url not for other pages like if I write example.com/index.htm then it doesn't redirect to http://www.example.com/index.php however it redirects example.com to http://www.example.com. but doesn't redirect the urls with the pages. How can I redirect every url of a website from non-www to www? Please help me. Thanks in advance.

I had something similar. Not sure if this is proper but I believe this should give you an idea of how to handle it.

rewritecond %{HTTP_HOST} !www\.example\.com
rewriterule ^/(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1 [r=301]

I made some updates cause I was a little off, but here is the correct

hello, thanks for the reply. I have tried as what you 've said but it is not redirecting the url as well as the pages. I have also tried by appending $1 after url in order to make it dynamic. But still its not working. I want to know is it possible anyhow to redirect all the pages of the site from non www to www? I mean if user clicks on the url from search engine then there may be possiblity that user will get the url with the pages i mean example.com/index.php so he/she will be automatically get redirected to www url.

Not sure why but its lower casing the RewriteRule and the RewriteCond directive statements.

As for $1 it is usually whatever you have in the URI which is dictated by this part of the rewriterule statement, ^/(.)$, the (.) is the uri that will become $1.

If its not working at all, are you sure you added this?

yes thats right.. I have tried by changing case of rewritecond to RewriteCond. Also I have tried putting /(.*)$ after url. But still its not working... its working for only example.com not for any other pages...
